The Scoop: There is basically only one real reason to download and play Narbacular Drop, but it is a hell of a reason. It’s the direct precursor to 2007 Game of the Year Portal. The story goes like this: a group of Digipen students created Narbacular Drop, a rough but undeniably clever 3D puzzle game. The entire team was scooped by by Valve and given the time, resources, and additional expertise to take the puzzle concept first prototyped in N. Drop and blow it up into something amazing.
While it’s true Narbacular Drop doesn’t hold a candle to Portal (few games do), the game does manage to stand on its own two feet, despite being a student project. The game was the 2006 IGF student showcase winner, a Slamdance Guerilla Gamemaker Competition Finalist, and won various other accolades, as well.
For those that haven’t heard of this or even its much more successful successor, the game is basically a 3D environmental puzzle game. You can’t jump, and the only real tool you have at your disposal is the ability to create two portals. Enter one, and you come out of the other. Sounds simple. But it quickly becomes brain bending. Fall through a portal you’ve placed on the ground, and you’ll shoot out of the other portal, which you placed on the wall. The extreme possibilities should be very evident.
