The Scoop: The main reason Today’s Free Game is Championship Manager: Season 01/02 is because it’s important to me to highlight a wide variety of different types of games, and so far we haven’t covered many sports games OR many management/simulation games. If you’ve never played any of the numerous “sports management” titles but were ever curious… now is your chance. It is free, after all.
CM Season 01/02 is notable for including an incredible number of leagues and players to simulate. All told, there are over 100 leagues included, from 26 countries, including all of Europe, the United States, South Korea, Brazil, and others.
Although the game is getting a little old at this point (it was initially released in 2001), the sheer volume of fan support keeps this from being too much of an issue. An up-to-date December 2008 data update is available at the link below, for example. This adds new players, removes deleted players, updates trades and rosters, etc. Truly impressive.
The game doesn’t have much in the way of graphics, but hardcore sports sim fans seem to agree that the simulation itself is among the best. I’m not near enough of an expert to agree/disagree, but I trust their judgement.
