The Scoop: Sorry about the volume of retro 80s titles TFG has been spotlighting lately. Unless those types of games are the reason you’re visiting. In that case… you’re welcome. In any case, we have more modern freeware indie titles on the slate for the next couple weeks.
Anyway… on to SkyRoads! Initially released in 1993 as Shareware, this space-themed racer ended up becoming a pretty major word-of-mouth hit, thanks in large part to the game’s intuitive and fluid controls. The spacebar and up/down/left/right keys were used to create an easy “jump and move” motion. Up made the ship go faster, down made the ship go slower.
30 courses with variable difficulty levels make the package a fairly complete one. It’s amazing to me that that much content fits into a package that is half a meg.
SkyRoads runs fast and is very much a dexterity/twitch game. The inclusion of a jump button almost gives it the feel of an “on rails platformer” rather than a traditional racing game, if that makes sense. Regardless of what you call it, when you get into the zone with SkyRoads it becomes a completely zen-like experience, so don’t pass this one up just because its over 15 years old.
