The Suffering

The Scoop: The Suffering is an Action/Horror title that was released on PC and consoles in 2004. Don’t be fooled by the game’s awful boxart or the fact that the protagonist is named “Torque” – The Suffering was actually reviewed quite positively, when it was released.

The game was made free thanks to an agreement between publisher Encore and the US Air Force. In exchange for the free gaming goodness, you’ll just have to sit through one ad at start-up and another on shut down.

Most review scores are in the 80s (or higher) and the worst anyone had to say about it came from Computer Gaming World, which described it as merely “standard.” Not a bad batting average, I’d say.

The game had a couple major conceits that set it apart from the pack. Torque’s choices play into a morality system, which effect the game’s outcome. Gamers can follow, good, evil, or neutral paths. Additionally, when Torque’s “insanity meter” (just roll with it) fills, he can transform himself into a monster for massive damage. Fun!
