The Scoop: Mofuya Defense is a tower defense game intended for veterans of the genre. If you’re inexperienced with the genre, I strongly encourage you to check out Mushroom Revolution, or another more newbie-friendly tower defense title. But for people like myself, that have experienced all TD has to offer (and then some), Mofuya Defense’s punishing difficulty level really hits the spot.

There are a couple things I really like about the game. The first is its oldschool visual style. Mofuya Defense looks like it could have been done on the NES or SNES – from the sound, to the sprites, to the backgrounds. It’s an era of gaming that I remember fondly, and MD conjures up fond memories.

The other aspect that I enjoy is Mofuya Defense’s big gameplay wrinkle – you need to build power plants to power your towers. They come in a variety of styles and prices, and are vulnerable to attack from airborne units. So it’s possible (indeed, it’s likely, if you’re not careful) for one of your power plants to be destroyed, causing your towers to lose power, leaving you defenseless. It adds another layer of strategy to an already deep genre.

A couple of tips – 1) You don’t NEED to build your towers near a power plant – doing so just gives them a slight boost. But technically, you can bunch all your power plants anywhere. 2) Though the game is Japanese, there’s an ENGLISH button that will let you play the whole game translated. Don’t miss it.
