The Scoop: Gregory Weir, the same individual behind the experimental (I Fell in Love with) The Majesty of Colors is back, this time with a more traditional title.
Exploit is an innovative and devilishly difficult puzzler that uses the always-intriguing backdrop of computer hacking as a metaphor for all the game’s puzzles. The setting works extremely well – the world of hackers isn’t just used for between-mission flavor and to set the game’s overall tone. Instead, each puzzle you solve in story mode is actually you hacking into some system, to advance the plot. It makes the slow-paced, thinking man’s puzzles seem exciting.
The puzzles themselves are logic-based, and become quite difficult & complex. The game doesn’t punish trial & error, however. So most gamers, even unexperienced ones, will probably be able to work through most of the puzzles if they’re patient enough to experiment and work through possible solutions. I felt that I was completely stuck, at one point. But I left the game and came back a couple days later with fresh eyes, and solved the puzzle easily.
The goal of each stage is to fire a little orange dot, via clicking an orange triangle outside the stage, into the green node at the center. The problem is that all kinds of barriers will be set up in your way. Early puzzles are just basic order-of-operations puzzles. Example: you’ll need to fire one orange dot that triggers a barrier to go down. This allows another orange dot to reach the goal.
Things get MUCH more complex, however. With dot splitters, multiple types of barriers, locked doors, and more. Exploit is not an easy game. But for puzzle fans, it’s a joy.

Great stuff. Kind of silly story, but the puzzles are really clever. I don’t like the cheat button though… even if you can only use it once.
