The Scoop: Self Destruct is an excellent, energetic 2D shooter made by the same individual that made yesterday’s free game Don’t Look Back. Impressive that Cavanagh can pull off such different genres so well.
The game has a couple of things going for it. For one, it’s blisteringly fast. For another, the enemy ships come in waves, and these waves are procedurally generated. Meaning you can’t rely on memorization, and have only your reflexes to fall back on. When you combine these two facts the result is a game that’s very challenging, but very rewarding.
The gameplay hook somehow manages to be both innovative and intuitive. By holding down the shield button, blue bullets can be absorbed, thereby powering up your weapon. Your shield depletes rapidly however, so it becomes necessary to scoop up the recharge medals liberally left behind by the enemy. This creates a great feedback loop – absorbing bullets drains shields quickly, but allows you to kill more enemies, which leads to more shield-recharging powerups. The power of your weapon corresponds with your ship’s health, which gives added incentive to keep it powered-up at all times.
Self Destruct is a great 2D shooter. The strategic shield-based gameplay, the randomness of the waves, and the fast pace of the action all mesh together into a blissful and energetic package.
