The Scoop: Command and Conquer is an excellent mid-90s RTS, developed by Westwood Studios. EA (which bought and eventually shut down Westwood) released the title as a 100%-free download in 2007, to celebrate the franchise’s 12th birthday.
C&C still hold up well to this day, despite being nearly 14 years old. It, along with Warcraft, ruled the RTS roost during the 90s, and for good reason. Although they weren’t technically the first RTS titles released, the two franchises defined the genre in such a way that their influence is still being felt to this day. You’ll gather resources, build a base, and eventually build offensive units to conquer your opponent’s base.
Some elements of the presentation are very dated (the hilariously bad FMV cutscenes), but the gameplay itself is still fun and compelling. The single-player campaign consists of two campaigns, each one lasting for over 15 missions – not bad at all for a free release.
