Evacuation

The Scoop: Evacuation is a cute little single-screen puzzler that is considerably more clever than it might initially appear to be. The premise is that your spaceship has been infested with aliens, and the only way to get rid of them is to open the colored hatches in a way that will suck them all out into space, without doing the same to the ship’s captain and crew.

The catch is that you can only open and close *all* the hatches of a particular color – you can’t select a hatch individually. So you might need to open up a specific purple hatch to get rid of a level’s set of aliens, but doing so will also open up a different purple hatch that is protecting several members of your crew. It’s a great puzzle setup.

The levels are generated randomly, which is both a blessing and a curse. The advantage is that you can’t just memorize each stage’s solution – you’ll need to use your brain each and every time. But the downside is that this randomness sometimes produces stages that are a little too random – all 20+ crewmembers in one room, or other similar oddities.

The game purportedly has 200 stages (I never made it that far). In between each stage you’ll gain a few more “recruits” so you don’t need to stress about sacrificing a few humans here and here, if doing so gets rid of all the aliens in a fast and effective way. This slightly more forgiving nature I think made Evacuation a lot more addicting than it would have been otherwise.

Clever concept. But would probably work better as more of a true puzzle game, rather than the arcadey randomized thing they have going on.

It’s frustrating to make one slight misclick and have to start all the way at the beginning.
