The Scoop: Dark Cut is a violet little medieval surgery game. There are sequels, but I actually found the original to be the most playable of the three. The entire thing is a little on the short side (just three operations), but it’s always better for something to leave you wanting more than to wear out its welcome.
What I like most about Dark Cut is its heavy use of contextual commands to keep the experience fresh, and moving along at a nice clip. In one section you might be moving your mouse to sew up a wound, and in another moving your mouse to wipe down an area with a rag. Although the actual mouse movements might be almost identical, they feel different because of the on-screen context.
The other aspect I enjoyed (although it is rather dark) is that the medieval medicine you’re practicing is actually pretty ineffective. In one surgery you’re trying to clear someone’s plague boils. You’ll clean the sores, open them up, drain them with leeches, and “help” in other ways, yet in the end, the plague remains. I also think the soldier with the arrow being removed might be worse after your visit than before.
