The Scoop: ToJam Thing is a 2D single-screen shooter created by Everyday Shooter mastermind Jonathan Mak for the 2006 Toronto Indie Game Jam.
The game itself is pretty decent, but the real value in ToJam thing is just getting the opportunity to play an earlier game of Mak’s. As a huge fan of his title Everyday Shooter, it’s interesting to see which ideas carried over into that that title, which he evolved, and which were dropped.
There are significant similarities. Like Everyday Shooter, making it through the single stage alive is actually quite simple, if that’s your only goal. Playing the stage “right” and attempting to set up big combos and achieve a high score is much more difficult. ED also carried over many aesthetic similarities, from the style of the enemies, to the stage’s progress bar at the bottom of the screen, and even the look of the little combo points you pick up.
If you’ve never played Everyday Shooter, ToJam Thing is still worth exploring. It puts a nice twist on the shooter formula. I especially enjoy the fact that it has an actual “end.” You don’t just get to play until you die – you have one song’s worth of time to squeeze as many points out of the experience as you can.
