Area51

The Scoop: Area 51 is a 2005 FPS developed and published by Midway. Not to be confused with the mid-90s arcade light gun games of the same name. Similar to The Suffering, the full title was made available as a free download thanks to a special US Air Force. sponsorship.

The game got mostly middling reviews, with the general consensus being that it didn’t really do anything offensively bad, but it also didn’t do anything new, either. It’s basically just a standard FPS, through-and-through. This might be a problem for a full-priced game release, but as a completely free download, a competent FPS with an intriguing setting is pretty fantastic.

Here’s to hoping other similar sponsorships of this manner pop up, giving us an opportunity to play more of the older “good but not great” titles without having to actually drop any of our hard-earned dough.

I was in the closed beta for this game and you’re pretty much on the spot about how good it is. It wasn’t really horrible (I think David Duchovny voices the main character, even) but it wasn’t really good either. They sent me the game for free for being a good tester and I never opened it.

It’s cool that this was released for free. David Duchovny voices the main character, and Marylin Manson voices the main villain(Sort of). I heard that the online multiplayer was pretty fun too.
