The Scoop: Chain of Fire is a game that has a better concept than execution. But the concept amused me enough that I still decided to profile it.

Each stage has a large number of people wandering around. Your goal? To catch all these people on fire as quickly and efficiently as possible. Fun! You select which individual will start the blaze, and which direction they will run, and then watch the flames spread outward into the crowd. As the levels progress new wrinkles are introduced – trees that burn longer and (obviously) are stationary, puddles that will put out the flaming men, etc.

The game never really evolves past “novelty” status. Since the disbursement of people is random each time you attempt a stage, it can be hard to develop strategy. On some difficult later stages I found myself igniting someone in the optimum location/direction over and over, until the stars aligned and everyone happened to ignite. Too often some individuals would be missed because they moved in a random, unexpected direction.

To the game’s credit, a “free play” mode is unlocked early on that allows you to progress through the stages even if you don’t meet the stiff score requirements. It’s a much more enjoyable way to set ablaze your crowds of people.

I have a hunch that a better game could be made with this basic premise, but still… playing with fire is fun!
